Hawker

This page contains info on two types, the Hunter and Sea Fury.

        
 

Hunter

One of the post-war British success stories was the Hawker Hunter, which saw long service with both the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy, as well as enjoying a healthy export order book. Some of the aircraft, however, where not newly built, but refurbished after either being purchased by the Hawker company, or coming from RAF stocks.

Abu Dhabi

All were camouflaged in Dark Earth/Light Earth, Azure Blue undersides and a thin red cheat line.

Two of the Hunters listed below were seen at Luqa on 19.01.71, whilst the delivery dates of the other two remains unknown.

India

Information on T.56’s, seen during 1969, kindly supplied by Ian Hawkridge.

Two different Air India B.707s were seen. Where they somehow connected with the deliveries listed below? These were VT-DVB on 09.01 and VT-DXT on 23.01. These two B.707S were later transferred to the Indian Air Force (date unknown) and became K2900 (VT-DVB) and K2899 (VT-DXT).

Hunter Deliveries to the Indian Air Force

Thanks to Air Britain (Historians) Ltd putting their magazines on CD in .pdf format, I have, in the course of accessing those CDs, come across the above article about Indian AF Hunter deliveries.

Between June 1966 and September 1967, the Indian Air Force took delivery of 48 refurbished Hunters comprising 12 T.66Ds and 36 F.56As. Finished in RAF camouflage of grey/green/silver with IAF roundels and fin flashes, the Hunters were modified and refurbished Belgian and Dutch aircraft bought by HS and sold to the IAF.

The aircraft were delivered in batches of four at approximately monthly intervals and were escorted by a Canberra B.58 of the IAF. This aircraft usually flew to England ten days to a fortnight beforehand and acted as navigation leader during the delivery flight. It is believed that most of the Hunters were placed in storage on arrival in India.

Oh, how the times have changed . . .


Whoever wrote the RAF Luqa Operations Record Book could not have been an aircraft enthusiast (although in fairness, it should be pointed out that they weren’t expected to be). Still less a Maltese enthusiast. Here’s what was written in November 1966.

”Hunter aircraft on delivery flights to the Iraqi, Jordanian and Saudi Arabian Air Forces no longer excite interest on the station but a new sight this month was the first Hunter aircraft for the Indian Air Force staging through.”

Iraq

It is believed that Iraqi Hunters F.6s, received in 1957 and flown by rebel pilots flying from Mosul, were the first Hunters anywhere to go into action, being used in rocket attacks on royalist strongholds in southern Iraq during the 1958 revolution.

Iraq went on to receive large numbers of Hunters intermittently until 1968, these all being reconditioned ex-RAF, ex-Belgian AF and ex-¬Netherlands AF machines, transited through Malta in 1964, as did others before and after this date.

Camouflage for these (and Jordanian Hunters) was the standard RAF dark green/dark sea grey with light grey undersides. The Iraqi examples also had red noses, fins, tailplanes (both upper and lower surfaces) and wing tips.

I have received the following note about this particular aircraft.

This does not belong to an Iraqi Hunter or indeed any other type it operated but in view of the date it must have been one of the earlier deliveries since the earliest of the refurbished ones were only delivered in March 64 (to Iraq as 570 and 571).

This number could therefore be a typo for 573.

717 F.6 22.04.67 23.04.67 Courtesy of the Air Britain Information Exchange comes the following: Former 229 OCU F6 XG159 had its Minor servicing completed at Number 5 MU RAF Kemble on the 30th March 1967 during which it was re-sprayed Dark Green over Dark Sea Grey with Grey 9-05-BS2660 (early LAG) under surfaces. RJAF markings were painted on and the aircraft was despatched by Kemble on the 17th April 1967 arriving at RAF Luqa from Dunsfold, flown by a Contractor pilot, departing for Amman AB the following day. Destroyed on the ground some six weeks later at Mafraq AB at the start of Operation "Moked", the beginning of the Six-Day War.

Kenya

The first two aircraft are two-seaters, the remaining four being single-seaters. They all carried standard RAF camouflage of dark green/dark grey upper surfaces, with light grey undersides.

Kuwait

Camouflage was dark earth and middle stone on the upper surfaces, with azure blue undersides, similar to the Qatar examples below.

All three aircraft were seen on 23.05.69, most probably the day of arrival.

These seem to have later been re-serialled, replacing the number ‘1’ with ‘2’. Also, current Lebanese AF aircraft carry the serial without a hyphen.

Qatar

The Qatar AF F.78s and T.79s were similar to the RAF’s FGA.9 and T.7 respectively. Camouflaged dark earth and middle stone on the upper surfaces, with azure blue undersides. Roundels were (starting from the outside) dark brown, light tan and white.

Rhodesia

The Royal Rhodesian Air Force placed an order for 12 Hunter F.6s to be brought to full FGA.9 standard. Serial numbers ran from RRAF 116-127, deliveries commencing in January 1963 and completed by 1964. The aircraft went into service with No. 1 squadron at Thornhill.

The following two aircraft were sold directly to Rhodesia on 19.04.63 and carried no G-9- identities.

It's possible that this aircraft had already been converted during its RAF service to FGA.9 standard, but its last recorded unit, No. 74 Sqdn., did not operate this particular version.

        
 

Saudi Arabia

Six Hunters, four F.6s and two T.7s, part of the Magic Carpet contract which also included Lightning interceptors and Thunderbird SAMs, were delivered to the R. Saudi AF between May - June 1966 to provide jet experience for Saudi pilots who were later to fly the BAC Lightning.

The aircraft were delivered in three batches of two aircraft, and were finished in a scheme of light earth/dark earth upper surfaces with azure blue belly. The insignia and lettering were in emerald green. On the left upper and right lower wing surfaces appeared the insignia, on the opposite surfaces appeared RSAF in green. The camouflage pattern followed that of RAF Hunters.

Based at Khamis Mushajt AB, close to the Yemeni border, they flew retaliatory raids against Yemeni and Egyptian strong points in the Yemen civil war.

Singapore

The batch of sixteen Hunters destined for the Singapore AF had started life as F.6’s with the RAF, being upgraded or converted to FGA.9 and FR.10 standard.

For use with the Singapore Air Defence Command (SADC), twelve of these Hunters were designated as F.74, equivalent to the FGA.9, and as a ground attack aircraft. The remaining four were given the designation F.74A, having both a ground attack and reconnaissance role. Camouflage was a dark and light earth, with light grey undersides, with a white serial number on the fuselage, and black numbers on the wing undersides. No markings were carried on the fin.
