Dawn Patrol, 1973

The exercise started operations on 5th June, until the 15th.

The Vulcans were at Luqa by 1 June, but the Buccaneers’ arrival were staggered over three days, 2nd and 4th. An additional aircraft was also requested for the purposes of the exercise, one being flown from the OCU.

I believe the Vulcan and Buccaneer lists are now complete, but other aircraft that may have participated, such as Canberras, may be missing. I therefore welcome any additions, including what transport aircraft may have been used.

Dawn Patrol, 1974

Preparations started on the 25th with the arrival of 617 Squadron Vulcans. The exercise, with participating forces from eleven NATO countries, spanned the width of the Mediterranean from Gibraltar in the West, to Cyprus in the East. The main tasks were photo-reconnaissance, anti-shipping strikes and support for amphibious landings.

One Vulcan crew was brought over by Air Transport Command aircraft. This crew would return to the UK in a Vulcan, whilst the crew that flew the Vulcan in departed by an ATC aircraft.

Dawn Patrol started on 29 April, ending on 11 May, being celebrated by a Vulcan flypast over Luqa airfield.

All aircraft performed daily sorties, including Sundays. All Buccaneers carried ‘B’ type roundels, whilst the Vulcans had a mixture of both ‘B’ & ‘D’ type roundels.
